In logistics, facing challenges is routine. Despite higher production costs and financial pressures, the push for eco-friendly change, staff shortages, and a decrease in the number of firms, the sector is still expanding, with a 5.5% growth as forecast by the “Gino Marchet” Contract Logistics Observatory at Politecnico di Milano.

Companies in the sector were ready and, when confronted with recent emergencies, attempted to respond with practical and strategic decisions. The Observatory has pinpointed six strategies that are reshaping the scope, activities, key performance indicators and objectives of the Logistics sector. Therefore, work is underway to reorganise logistics, digitise processes and related documents, safeguard information, and implement big data analytics. Another focus is of course the green transition, aiming to cut carbon emissions and move from owning to using resources.

Technological innovation is undoubtedly driving change. New 4.0 technologies and applications are inspiring and supporting a sustainable shift in every way, both economically and environmentally, with a special emphasis on social impact. In digital transport technologies, for example, new planning solutions are emerging that are efficient and socially driven, taking into account the preferences and working conditions of drivers. There are ways to monitor tasks and manage work. For example, the latest generation of devices can detect and adjust actions and movements that could impact health and safety. Many platforms have been created to help drivers, for example, to see if stopping places are available and how good they are. Also, new ways are being found to support working from home, and not just for office workers.
